Do Vitamins Help with Weight Loss

As a nutritionist, I often get asked about vitamins. Should you or should you not take supplements? do they help in weight loss?

Vitamins are chemical compounds necessary to health and life. They don’t have any calories and their influence on weight loss results from their stimulation of metabolism –– if that is a problem.

There are 2 types of vitamins, water-soluble and fat-soluble. The fat-soluble vitamins are vitamin A, E, D and K. These vitamins are absorbed in the intestines by combining with lipids and bile salts. A diet without fat will result in a deficiency of these vitamins. Thus, if you are taking a vitamin D supplement, take it with a spoon of peanut butter, some nuts, or a salad with some oily dressing. Otherwise, it will not be absorbed. Vitamin A and E are potent anti-oxidants. Vitamin K helps with blood clotting to prevent bleeding. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption contributing to bone health.

It is best to get these vitamins from food, at the exception of vitamin D. When taken in large doses through supplements, they can results in toxicity.

Water-soluble vitamins are the ones used by your mitochondria to metabolize macronutrients and produce energy. A sluggish mitochondria will cause fatigue, weight gain, and a series or health problems. In this category, we have vitamin B complex (there are 7 of them) and vitamin C. These vitamins do not cause any toxicity because they are eliminated in urine when taken in excess.
